All first-time TAs whose first language is not English are required by the university to be tested by the English as a Second Language (ESL) Program and certified as ready to teach before they can be assigned assistantship responsibilities. The testing procedure includes two tests: the SPEAK test and the ELPT test. Students should request evaluation through the department. The Test of Spoken English (TSE) is not required, although students who pass the TSE with a score of 50 or higher will be waived from the SPEAK test and then just need to pass the ELPT test for TA certification. Since the TSE is no longer offered by TOEFL, previous scores dated within two years ago will still be accepted.
