We are pleased that you are interested in our department! Quality teaching has been a hallmark of our department since its inception. Our degree programs are designed to be career oriented and to provide a good balance between theory and practice. You would receive a first-rate education at Iowa. Our faculty have earned international reputations for their excellent research in various areas of probability, statistics, and actuarial science. They are active, congenial, and dedicated to being good teachers and researchers.
In addition to a core of excellent students from the USA, we have international students from Canada, China, Ghana, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Korea, Romania, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, and Ukraine. Our graduates find permanent employment in business, industry, government, and academia. Some students use their M.S. in Statistics to supplement their undergraduate education, while others use it as a stepping stone to go on for their Ph.D. With a good education and strong communication skills, many good placement opportunities are available. Company representatives often recruit right here on campus. Our courses, especially the applied courses, are generally designed to encourage cooperative work. For example, students work on group projects. The more theoretical courses also typically encourage cooperative work by encouraging students to work together on homework and not grading on a curve.
