Re: Admissions, Graduate
Will my obvious lack of mathematics prevent me from getting admitted?
You should have a strong background in a mathematics-related field to do well in our graduate program. Your entire application, including academic transcripts, GRE scores and letters of recommendation, will be considered as a whole when making an admission decision.
May I take classes on a provisional basis until my GPA is high enough to apply?
You may enroll as a non-degree undergraduate student and take as many courses as you desire. Please check with the Office of Admissions to get information about the application process. You may also enroll as a non-degree graduate student; however, you may only do this for one semester and you may only take two courses.
Do I need the GMAT or GRE to get into the program?
We require the GRE. We do not accept the GMAT.
Am I required to take the GRE subject test?
No.
May I send all materials to the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and the Office of Admissions in one package?
Yes. Please clearly mark which set goes to the Department, and which set goes to Admissions, so that they may be delivered accordingly and to avoid delays.
May I send the original official transcripts to the Office of Admissions, and send a photocopy of the transcripts to the Department?
Yes.
I was enrolled in the M.S. program at the University of Iowa two years ago. Do I need to reapply to resume my studies?
If you have been absent from the University for 12-36 months, you must complete the Residency Review for Returning Students online. Please visit the Office of Admissions web site for special conditions for Returning Students.
Re: Admissions, Undergraduate
I'm currently a senior in Actuarial Science and heard the advisors have changed. Is Professor Broffitt still my advisor?
Yes. Professor Broffitt will continue advising his students until they graduate, and Professor Shyamalkumar will advise undergrads who are admitted beginning Fall 2007.
I was enrolled in the B.S. program at the University of Iowa last year but had to go home for a family emergency. Must I fill out a whole new application to return now?
If you wish to resume study in the college or degree program you left, and you have been absent less than 12 months, you do not need to reapply for admission. Please visit the Office of Admissions web site for special conditions for Returning Students.
Re: Courses, Grades, and Transfer Credit
Can I get college credit for my internship?
Yes. To get college credit, you need to work with a faculty member who will sponsor you. Register for 22S:191:XXX (under the faculty member's instructor number) for 1sh. As an alternative, to get a notation on your transcript, you can either contact the Career Center or register on the Employment Expo login page, which the Career Center automatically reviews. This is for 0sh (course number 409:192:001) and is for a pass/nonpass grade. Besides the transcript notation, this is good for students who need to be registered for insurance or immigration purposes.
I earned a 5 on the AP Statistics test. What is it worth?
A 5 on the AP Stats is considered the equivalent of 22S:2, 22S:8, or 22S:25.
[Please refer to the Advanced Palcement Program Credit Policies for more AP information.]
What is the "residency requirement" for undergrads?
You may transfer credit from another school towards your degree, but you must complete a significant quota of hours from us. You need either 90sh at the University of Iowa, 45sh out of the final 60sh at the University of Iowa, or the final 30sh at the University of Iowa to satisfy the residency requirement.
What is the "residency requirement" for graduate students?
At least 24sh of the required courses for the MS degree must be completed at the University of Iowa after admission to the program.
I am a graduate student. Which courses carry graduate credit?
Courses numbered 100 and above (with earned grades of A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C+, C, C-, and S) carry graduate credit. Hours for courses numbered below 100 will not be counted, nor will those grades figure into your GPA.
When will my graduate transfer credit be applied?
Graduate transfer credit may be used at the discretion of your advisor. When you are ready to defend your thesis or take your comprehensive exams, your advisor will go over your Plan of Study with you and determine which UI courses and which transfer courses will be figured into your degree. Note: while you will get the hours, grades from courses taken at other institutions are never figured into your GPA.
May I register my graduate assistantship as an internship?
No academic credit is allowed for the teaching or research service for which the student receives payment as a graduate assistantship.
Re: Graduate Assistantships
When is the best time to apply for financial support?
As soon as possible. Decisions for the coming academic year are typically made by April 15. Prospective students are encouraged to apply by mid-February.
Do you offer financial support to international students?
Yes. Offers are made to top students based upon their academic records and English communication skills.
I currently have a half-time assistantship in Statistics and would like to accept an additional quarter-time assistantship from another department. Is this possible?
Any appointment that, alone or combined with an appointment at another department, causes an employee to have a standard percent of appointment greater than 50% needs prior approval from Dean Daniel Berkowitz of the Graduate College. If the appointment is over 50% and off-standard, then approvals from both Dean Barkan and Dean Curto are needed. Once approvals are obtained, the DEO needs to forward a copy of Dean Curto's approval to Employee and Labor Relations, who will in turn forward it to COGS. Most international graduate students have visas that do not permit them to hold any appointment over 50%.
Re: Job Placement
What is the likelihood of an international student gaining a permanent position after the program?
Students apply themselves for jobs and hence the likelihood of gaining a position very much depends on the level of their personal initiative. Besides using academic credentials, companies use criteria that may involve SOA/CAS exam credits (for actuaries), leadership and communication skills, and outgoing personalities.
