Models"
3:00 Refreshments in 241 Schaeffer Hall
3:30 Talk in 140 Schaeffer Hall
Local polynomial regression involves fitting a polynomial function over a
small region whose midpoint is the target point x, and the estimated
intercept is the resulting regression estimate at x. The information from
the estimated slopes was somewhat lost since inference focuses on the
intercepts. In this talk, we show that there are many advantages when
incorporating both intercepts and slopes in local polynomial fitting for
nonparametric and semiparametric models. The advantages include Analysis of
Variance decomposition, symmetric and asymptotically idempotent smoothing
matrix, penalized likelihood interpretation, and straightforward F-tests for
nested models.
