Home > Students > Actuarial Science > Recommended Timing for Taking Professional Exams

Students are encouraged to check CAS/SOA exam dates early, as they often conflict with midterms and finals. Students should make necessary arrangements with their instructors as early as possible.

By the time students graduate, most will have passed at least two professional examinations. Outstanding students will have passed all five Preliminary Education Examinations. The process of taking exams continues through the first several years of employment.

Students are encouraged to attempt to pass three exams prior to graduation. Demonstrated success on the professional exams is an important aspect of securing an actuarial job.

When to take a specific actuarial exam is an individual matter. Students should consider the amount of preparation time required for the exam, the demands of academic courses and any part-time employment commitments.

Exam Fee Refunds
Donations from alumni, insurance companies, actuarial consulting firms and friends of the program are used to refund CAS/SOA examination fees to students who pass these professional exams while enrolled at Iowa. Students are required to submit a refund application before the deadline of each exam session.
